Quito is a high-altitude Andean capital with a stunning UNESCO colonial old town, dramatic mountain surroundings, and spring-like weather year-round. It's very affordable, walkable in parts, and central for exploring the Andes and Amazon, but the altitude is no joke, traffic and pollution are real, and safety has slipped in recent years. It suits budget-minded people who love history, mountains, and mild weather over beaches or buzz. A bit sleepy after dark.
