Pai

Southeast Asia · Thailand · Asia

Bohemian mountain hideaway — hammocks, hot springs, and reggae on the river.

Pai is a tiny mountain town in northern Thailand, a hippie-and-backpacker haven of hot springs, waterfalls, rice valleys, and a famously chilled-out pace. It's incredibly cheap, beautiful, and slow, drawing wellness seekers and free spirits who want to drop out of the rush. The catch is that it's remote, reached by a winding 762-curve road, with tiny infrastructure, basic healthcare, and the same burning-season smoke as Chiang Mai. Best for budget travelers and slow-living types who want mountains and quiet over convenience.

Best for

Not for

career networkers
convenience addicts
city lovers

A small, transient mix of backpackers, hippies, and a few long-stay expats over local northern Thai and hill-tribe communities. Very easy to meet fellow travelers in the tiny town, but it's seasonal and turns over fast.
