Cusco

Andes · Peru · South America

Inca stonework beneath colonial arches, llamas in the plaza and thin, golden mountain light.

Cusco is the ancient Inca capital high in the Peruvian Andes, a gorgeous stone-and-tile city that's the launchpad for Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley. Living here is cheap and visually spectacular, steeped in history and surrounded by epic trekking, but the 11,000-foot altitude is demanding, nights are cold, and the center is heavily geared to tourists. It suits adventurers and history lovers who can handle the altitude and a tourism-driven economy. Not a place for beach or modern-city comforts.
