Asunción is one of South America's most overlooked and affordable capitals, a hot, low-rise riverside city with a laid-back pace and very low cost of living. It's drawing budget-minded nomads and residency-seekers for its cheap living and easy tax setup, but it's sleepy, hot, infrastructure is basic, and there's little tourism polish or cultural buzz. It suits people who want maximum affordability and a quiet base over excitement or scenery. English is rare and Spanish (plus Guaraní) is essential.
